Used as an analytical reagent, a meat preservative, as well as a pharmaceutical product. It can also be used as a buffer and a ligand for acetic acid.

It can also be used in a number of organic reactions, as a (e.g. in the production of foam rubber),in the production of vinyl plastics, and in the manufacture of industrial detergents.
